Tim Shaw•Glass and Light
July 7 @ 09:00 – July 18 @ 17:00
Utilising the natural qualities of transparency, opalescence and opacity within glass, this summertime vocational course will focus on the different ways blown glass interacts with light.
We will explore the qualities of transmitted, reflected and refracted light as influenced by glass. Students will be encouraged to experiment with decorative elements using both hot and cold techniques, embarking on an exploration of form, texture, pattern and light.
This intensive course will cover the use of hot glass, both freeblowing and moldblowing, along with elements of sculpting glass on a daily basis. We will experiment with and develop colour techniques to enhance the optical qualities of clear glass. These will include applying powders and granules, casing, overlays, encalmo, and solid colour techniques.
In addition to hotworking, we will utilise coldworking techniques to create further elements that can be incorporated into the hot processes, influencing the illuminated qualities of the glass, such as tiles, canes, murrini and grall. We will also employ the use of cutting and sandblasting to further enhance the qualities of light within the glass.
Each student will create at least one table light, using a commercially available electric light base, along with a series of artworks designed to interact with light.
This will be an intensive hands-on course in both the hot and cold studios. Students will be encouraged to draw to develop their designs. This workshop has been designed to share my experience, enthusiasm and passion for working with glass and light. We’ll have a lot of fun and it will be action packed!
The cost includes accommodation in a 4-person room, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
