Tone Ørvik
My sculpture work is rooted in the narratives of the human face, expressed through different materials. Starting with stone carving and clay, then casting in bronze, and testing out several ceramic processes, I studied anatomy, the portrait, and relief sculpture with Boris Spivak in Seattle and Eugene Daub of San Pedro, California.
I started working with cast glass in 2005 and have since explored glass in figurative work and portrait commissions. This has led to an inquiry into the “nature” of glass, its idealizing quality as translucent and its expressive value as sculpture material in more opaque processes like pâte de verre.
I have been a sculptor for 35 years. I enjoy sharing and collaborating with students and colleagues through teaching, as well as writing about sculpture and our perceptions about the narrative nature of materials.
I am a Canadian-Norwegian, currently living in Norway. My exhibition background is largely in the US, as well as the UK and Norway. My MA in Glass is from the University of Wolverhampton, UK.
