Kiln Casting with Marie-Odile Savigny

The aim of the workshop is to understand a large range of techniques to make trainees autonomous using clear practical examples.

Great attention will be given to the creativity of the students to guide them in the exercises.

Summery of the program

2 projects:

P1 Making a hollow shape (square box) with a carved core (Multi piece fire resisting mold)
P2 Building a bas relief with a hollow figure.

2 exercises:

- Experimenting with different types of glass on small samples.
- Learning to make a multi pieces plaster mold with a thread.

3 demos:

- Bas relief in a terracotta mold

- Hollow bowl (multi pieces fire resisting mold).

- Rubber mold to cast wax. (lost wax process)

 

Theoretical portion:

- History of kiln-casting and pâte de verre. Example of old and contemporary glass products.

- Short description of glass (physical and chemical qualities) and of the firing programs.

- Answering technical questions.

Schedule:

Monday 26/08
Presentation of the students and of instructor/ Presentation of the 2 projects.
Starting the first project. (P1).

Demo for casting the core of the box and casting the mold of the lid on the ready made equipment. Each students will get a ready made cast plaster core.

Students will make sketches for the pattern of what they will carve on the plaster core and on the lid.

Demo of the terracotta mold.

 

Tuesday 27/8
Preparation of plaster plates in order to build the mold of the box.
Carving the core and the lid.
Making the mold, (first step.)
During waiting time, preparation of project number 2 (bas relief) by modeling with clay the motif.

Wednesday 28/8
Making the fire resisting mold on the first project (using the plaster plates first).

P2 Stamp clay on the clay motif (talc in between). The motif will be seen by transparency in the glass piece.

Thursday 29/8

Finishing the mold of the P1.
Casting the mold on the bas-relief P2.
Cleaning the surface of the P2 mold.

Friday 30/8
Estimation of the volume (with water) in order to have the weight of glass.
Washing the glass and weighing the glass.

For the 2 projects we shall use clear glass from the glass furnace.

Loading the kiln (the firing program will last 5 days from cold to cold).

Saturday 31/8      day off

Sunday 1/9
Test different quality of glass. Making samples in little terracotta mold or on little bas relief designed to be used for a piece of jewelry or as a project for a large piece.

Loading the kiln for a fast firing.

Demo: multi part mold for a bowl with a core.(Using the technique of the thread)

Exercise: making a small 3 dimensional shape with clay.

 

 

Monday 2/9

Demo: rubber mold to cast wax. (first coat of rubber).
Continuation of the exercise: The students will experiment using the thread technique on the clay shape made the previous day. (the result of the exercise will not be cast in glass during the workshop.

Demo: second coat of rubber.

 

Tuesday 3/9
Opening of the test kiln. Explanation for cold work. The results of the kiln will be used to experiment the different steps of the finishing work.

Theoretical course: what is glass, programs for the firing. History of kiln casting and pâte de verre.

Questions and answers on different processes.

Demo: plaster shelves around the rubber mold.

Casting a wax.


Wednesday 4/9
Creativity session: brain storming around the little elements for jewelry ;
Preparing a final display with what will have been produced during the class.

Thursday  5/9
Opening of the big kiln.
Cleaning the pieces. Cold work on the projects 1 and 2.

The projects 1 will have to be highly polished to see the engraved core through the glass.

Friday  6/9
Cold work,  studio cleaning.
Display of the finished pieces.
End of the work shop.

Marie-Odile Savigny

Marie-Odile Savigny (1960) graduated from the National Superior School of Applied Art in Paris in 1981. A year later she was employed by the famous Crystal Factory Daum in Nancy.
