At the Glass Furnace, where we host approximately 30,000 children each year, our school trips include an activity that intersects production processes with school education. A specialist museologist, who is well-acquainted with the primary school curriculum, participated in all activities at the Glass Furnace, helping us create a booklet that assists students in connecting their experiences at the Glass Furnace with what they have learned at school. This way, glass becomes a part of the children’s education.

Students visiting the foundation first watch the animated film “Masters of Fire,” prepared by the Tacoma Glass Museum, which introduces them to the discovery and history of glass.

In the hot glass workshop, they watch a glassblowing demonstration, observing how glass is made and shaped.

In the flame-working workshop, our instructor, depending on the age group, creates a small figurine such as a fish or a penguin, explaining the process as they go.

These trips, aimed at introducing the unique material of glass to our children and youth, require a prior appointment.

Here’s a brief outline of the program:

  1. Meeting at the Glass Furnace
  2. Watching the Tacoma Glass Museum’s “Gods of Fire” Animation (10 min.): Students are introduced to the discovery and history of glass through this short animated film.
  3. Bead Demonstration (15 min.): Our master craftsman explains the basics of bead-making techniques, discussing the properties of glass and other materials used in bead-making, while also creating a bead or figurine. The demonstration concludes with a Q&A session.
  4. Hot Glass Demonstration / Production Viewing (15 min.): In our hot glass workshop, students watch glassblowing and continuous production for various companies. For safety reasons, viewers are seated in a special amphitheater section through a separate entrance. From here, they can observe the processes of gathering molten glass from the furnace, shaping it, and blowing it. The demonstration is accompanied by general information and concludes with a Q&A session.
  5. Fusion Activity (15 min.) – Optional: Students can participate in a 15-minute fusion activity in our fusion workshop using pre-prepared glass pieces. Each student receives one 20×20 cm square piece of clear flat glass and small colored glass pieces. They create a composition with these materials, which we then fuse in the kiln and transform into either a panel or a plate. The completed works are sent to the students in a box with a special “I Made This” label.

Please inform us whether this workshop will be included and the number of participants when making the reservation.

  1. Free Time: At the end of the tour, students can explore the Glass Furnace campus and shop for souvenir glass items in our store as a memento of the day.
